THE PRESENT

Immigrant Press launched its first literary line with a monolingual English edition; now the first of its bilingual editions in English and Spanish is on the shelves. This new series offers particular interest to language students without making compromises on the quality or range of the text(s); we believe a linguist no less than the general reader is stimulated by provocative themes and strong writing.

We use the best materials and present photographs with text in the preparation of our limited edition print runs. This provides the rationale for our non-profit motive; all earnings from sales are reinvested in future publications. Hence the .org domain, and our determination to make good writing and innovative texts available to the reading world in editions that will add distinction to your bookshelves.

Attention to design and a pleasant reading experience are foremost when it comes to putting these texts between covers. Silk-finish paperback covers look good until you drag a nail across them, so we use the extra protection of a luster finish; the ample cover-flaps of our softback collection draw from the Spanish publishing tradition, and mean our covers keep their shape.

Our papers are smooth on the fingertips and lightly cream in colour for a reading experience that is easy on the eye. The typefaces we use are Sabon (for fiction) and Palatino (for other titles), both for their visual clarity and their elegance. With their fine sewn bindings, Immigrant Press books won’t fall apart. We’ve also eschewed the current trend for increasingly large formats, measuring the size of our books to the size of our hands. As will be evident, our project is to bring you books that are beautiful objects as well as provocative reading.

Jon Lindsay Miles founded the Press for the publication of Along the Way. Walking in Úbeda, the first title for this independent press based in the small Andalusian town of Úbeda, awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2003, along with its sister-town Baeza, in recognition of its Renaissance architectural wealth.

Lola Cañete Bueno joined the Press in 2010 to provide translation assistance for its bilingual titles. Additional advice on matters of design and photography is offered by Carlos Arias.

THE FUTURE

Immigrant Press is still in its infancy but we have adventurous plans for the future.

The big news is the first publication in English of Haroldo Conti’s Sudeste, which Ana Basualdo, coordinator of the cultural supplement of Barcelona’s La Vanguardia, called “A masterpiece one never tires of reading”. This translation by Jon Lindsay Miles will be the first title in our new Immigrant Library of Translation [ILTr], bringing fine literary fiction to the English reading world in limited editions.

As a small independent publisher, we see our role to act as a translation laboratory for important works in the Spanish language somehow missed by other publishers. More details of this first book on the ILTr shelf will be made available as publication date approaches.

Work on the second of the diptych Migration Stories will begin in Autumn 2012, with publication of this new bilingual edition scheduled for the spring of 2013.
